Lia contemplated the stack of paint cans sitting on the kitchen floor of her new home. She’d gone for easy neutrals in all her previous apartments. In her first true home after a lifetime in rentals, she would let color live. She wondered what that said about her.

For the living room, she’d selected a faded salmon color that reminded her of fallen leaves on the forest floor, when the light hit them just right. Turmeric yellow would warm up the kitchen. She went with taupe in the studio, a neutral with a hint of warmth that would not distort colors while she was painting. It had been murder to match at the paint store.

She’d been nervous about the inevitably blotchy, amateur paint job she expected until she’d seen the opportunity this situation presented. Any flat color eventually felt dead to her, and it was always impossible to get exactly the shade she wanted. So she bought three cans of paint for each room, a gallon of a base color and quarts of two hues a half tick away in opposite directions.

Today they’d slop paint on the walls. Tomorrow she’d come back and play with sponges and rags to add texture and depth with the extra colors, and it would actually help if the base coat was a bit uneven. After that, the guy she’d hired would refinish the floors. Everyone would be happy. She could move in after Thanksgiving, and Peter could stop sleeping in the basement.

Peter popped in the back door, jacket-less in the unseasonably warm weather and carrying a cup of coffee. Lia recognized the misshapen mug as one Alma made in a ceramics class. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her to him as he surveyed the pyramid of cans.

“Good morning, Woman of Many Colors. The kids are settled with Aunt Alma.” He nodded at the paint. “When do you want to get started?”
